David Kuney is an Adjunct Professor of Law at the Georgetown University Law Center, and is a retired partner from Sidley Austin, LLP. He has practiced law for over 46 years. He is the author of On Rockingham Street. He has been an adjunct professor for approximately 32 years, including American University's Washington College of Law, New York Law School and currently, Georgetown University. His current practice focuses on appellate bankruptcy litigation, primarily representing amici curiae clients before the U.S. Supreme Court. Much of his work is pro bono representation. His recent amicus practice includes briefs in Bank of America, N.A. v. David B. Caulkett,(2015); Husky International v. Daniel Ritz,(2016); Csyewski v. Jevic Holding Corp,(2016); Lamar, Archer & Cofrin, LLP v. Appling,(2018); Ritter v. Lois Ritter,(2018); Bradley Taggart v. Shelley Lorenzen,(2018); and City of Chicago v. Fulton (2020). David’s pro bono practice focuses primarily on issues of bankruptcy law that have significant systemic importance to both debtors and creditors. David’s primary interest is in promoting legal and economic justice, and seeking to insure that the Bankruptcy Code provides both a safety-net and fresh start for distressed debtors, and a fair and balanced approach for creditors, both secured and unsecured. David is a fellow of the American College of Bankruptcy and the American College of Real Estate Lawyers. He formerly served on the Board of Directors of the American Bankruptcy Institute and the Board of Governors of the American College of Real Estate Lawyers. Much of his prior law practice focused on real estate bankruptcy. He was named "Lawyer of the Year" in the field of Bankruptcy for the Washington,D.C. area by Best Lawyers for 2014. Prior to retirement from Sidley Austin, David's practice focused mostly on real estate bankruptcy issues, including retail bankruptcy and commercial real estate. He is the lead author of THE SINGLE ASSET REAL ESTATE CASE, published in 2012 by the American Bankruptcy Institute and RETAIL AND OFFICE BANKRUPTCY published by the American Bankruptcy Institute in 2018.
