Background

About David MacMartin

On April 2, 2024, I assumed the position of Executive Director at the Carcross/Tagish First Nation (C/TFN) Government. In this role I work with C/TFN political and operational leaders to optimize the effectiveness and efficiency of C/TFN Government operations in support of the Nation's strategic goals and priorities in providing services to C/TFN citizens and in asserting, defending and expanding the scope of C/TFN treaty rights as a self-governing Nation. On September 1, 2023, I reactivated my private consultancy, Indigenous Peoples Consultation Issues Management, in the position of Principal Consultant, following completion of my tenure working for the Taku River Tlingit First Nation (TRTFN). On September 1, 2022, I joined the TRTFN as Treaty Coordinator and In January of 2023 I assumed the role of Treaty Negotiations Strategic Planner. I joined the Gwich’in Tribal Council (GTC) in February 2018 as Director of Intergovernmental Relations, after withdrawing from the PhD (History) program at the University of Saskatchewan (U of S), where I studied the history of Indigenous Peoples-Newcomer Relations and of the Law of Treaties with Indigenous Peoples. At the U of S, I was working on my dissertation topic, “The Honour of the Crown and Ontario’s Northern Treaties: Reconciliation Failure and A History of the ‘Taken Up’ Clause", where my studies were supported by a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) Doctoral Fellowship. I received a Master of Arts (History) Degree from the University of Calgary (U of C) in November 2015 where my thesis topic was, “D.G. MacMartin’s 1905 Treaty 9 Diary, Intergovernmental Conflict and Ontario’s Treaty 9 Role.” I previously obtained Master of Arts (Public Administration) and Bachelor of Arts (Political Science) degrees, from Carleton University and from the University of Toronto, respectively.
