About David Mallen

I have over 20 years of construction and permanent way experience. 4 years were spent as a site engineer for a civil and building contractor, 8 years with London Underground as a Track Designer and over 9 years at SKM/Jacobs. My current role is the Engineering Manger for the Ballarat Line Upgrade for V/Line. At London Underground i gained extensive design experience on renewals projects which included track reconditioning works in tunnelled environments with existing sub-standard clearances. I have also been involved in several feasibility studies to remodel existing S&C layouts in sidings and depots. The software I have been using for design is InRail (Bentley Rail Track) with Microstation and Clear Route for calculating clearances. During my time on the London Underground Graduate scheme I also worked with asset maintenance gangs, the finance department, civils construction team and the topographical surveyors. Since moving to Australia with SKM in 2008 I have carried out detailed designs at Craigieburn stabling yard and Mordialloc sidings in Melbourne. In Adelaide i carried out the track design for Dry Creek and Seaford depots along with the associated mainline works. I also carried out concept designs for the Rowville Rail Study and Melbourne Airport Rail Link along with feasibility designs for Grade Separation projects on the Dandenong Rail corridor. More recently i have been working on the Regional Rail Link project between Footscray and Deer Park and the level crossing removal project (NEPA). Before going to university I worked for a civil engineering contractor for 4 years as a site engineer where i was responsible for setting out civil works and maintaining the quality of work on site, along with planning the sequence of works and assisting with ensuring health and safety requirements were met.
