About David Marks
Professor David Marks was educated at University of Melbourne and clinically trained at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. He received FRACP in 1988 and PhD in ‘Mechanisms of cytotoxic drug action’ in 1990. He moved to London to train further in stem cell transplant with Prof Goldman at Hammersmith Hospital as MRC/LRF fellow and senior reg.3 years stint in Philadelphia as Assistant Professor in Hem/ Onc enabled him to set up a new unrelated donor transplant program and do p53 research in acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL). He returned to the UK in 1996 & was appointed as consultant in the Bristol BMT Unit (which he directed) and Hon Senior Lectureship at the Uni of Bristol. His research & scientific papers focus on clinical aspects of SCT (esp the use of alternative donors), ALL & infection. In he initiated the Clinical trials committee of the British Society of BMT, the!st national transplant trial group and chaired that group for 5 years. In 2004 he was promoted to Reader and in 2007 to Professor at the University and was Lead Clinician of the Bristol BMT Unit from 2003-9 and 2014-16. He received FRCPath in 2006. He is Transplant coordinator and was Deputy Chair of NCRI ALL working group and from 2007-2009 was President of BSBMT. He chaired the BSBMT Adjudication committee. He previously was Vice Chair (Europe) of the Advisory Committee of the CIBMTR and Scientific Secretary for EBMT London 2013. He was the CI of the Improvit study, a large multinational study of fungal prophylaxis. In 2017 he co-chaired the Tandem BMT meetings in Orlando.He has 2 children. He enjoys surfing, cycling, Australian Rules football travel, reading and cinema.He has a substantial CV of consulting pharma, chairing ad boards, getting new products through NICE, advising re research to develop new drugs, available on request. He was until oct 2020 MD of IMPACT UK. He retired from clinical work in June 2022 but continues to give clinical advice, attend national MDTs, work with the UK NCRI group and consult with multiple big Pharma companies in the areas of ALL and CAR T cells. Skills include: 1. Huge experience of clinical trials in transplant & haematology as MD of Impact 2. Proven track record of being productive in research: 310 papers, many senior authored & high impact, H-index of 82 3. Excellent communication skills, direct but tactful, quick thinking, mentorship of keen junior colleagues 4. High quality presentation of data, very strong at answering questions at major conferences 5. 40 years management of ill, complex haematology patients: I am a go to person for advice
