About David Marsden

At the age of 16 David took the decision to leave school, rather than follow a conventional academic route. He was lucky to be accepted on to a Cabinet Making course at the London Metropolitan University (formerly London College of Furniture), where he was awarded a City and Guilds Level 2 in 2005. On completion of the course, age 17, he helped to setup and run a family business, ‘Alternative Space Ltd’. Here he designed, made and installed, sustainable garden buildings. On moving to Herefordshire in 2009 David decided to return to cabinet making. At Hereford College of Technology he was awarded City and Guilds Level 3 in 2010. He also won the ‘Best Student Award’ for that year. His enjoyment and passion for this course motivated him to apply for a place on the Furniture Design and Craft course at the National School of Furniture (NSF). Studying at the National School of Furniture has allowed David to explore his interest in sustainable design. Partly as a result of his increasing awareness of environmental issues and partly driven by the current economic crisis, he has developed an interest in the potential for the reuse of existing and reclaimed materials, to create new objects that don’t compromise on good design. In 2011 David established ‘Peckham Pallets’, designing and making contemporary, bespoke garden furniture from otherwise disused pallets found in and around London. David is passionate about the longevity of products and furniture. For his final major project his aim was to produce a piece of current, well designed, furniture that used found and reclaimed materials. He wanted to enforce the notion that up cycled furniture does not have to be obvious in its approach, despite the materials used the furniture can still be considered expertly crafted and beautiful. After achieving a first at University David has been successfully running David Marsden Design in south London specialising in Furniture Design and construction, Exhibitions and installations
