About David McGuinness

Academic/Researcher working at Northumbria University in the Division of Architecture and the Built Environment. Key research interests: Urban and Regional Planning, Governance, Economic Development, Urban Regeneration, Sustainability and e-mobility. A bit more about me: I am an experienced academic having worked in a number of research and teaching roles at Northumbria University during the last 15+ years, initially in the Centre for Regional Economic Development (CRED) and more recently in the Division of Architecture and Built Environment. I currently teach on a number of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes relating to planning, regeneration, economic development and I coordinate the final year Surveying Dissertation module. I also have extensive experience of undertaking applied research and consultancy across a range of policy areas, including, urban regeneration, economic development, spatial planning, sustainable development and transport. Recent completed research includes an INTERREG project looking at e-mobility across the North Sea Region and a European Commission FP7 project - PRIMUS/Informed Cities which involved looking at knowledge brokerage and tools for local sustainability (see Informed Cities book, in publications). Current research projects focusing on the rapidly evolving systems of sub-national planning in England and the lack of effective sub- national governance structures in England. In the past I have contributed to research projects for the European Commission, Department of Work and Pensions, Institute for Local Governance, One North East, Government Office North East, Sunderland Arc and a wide range of local authorities and voluntary & community sector organisations. Accepting funded PhD supervision enquiries in the areas of planning, governance, regeneration and sustainability.
