About David Meredith

David is Research Software Engineering (RSE) group lead and a Chartered IT Professional (BCS CITP) at the STFC Hartree Centre with 25+ yrs experience, particularly in Full-Stack application innovation (Web, Grid, Cloud, Security, Enterprise). He completed a PhD and post-doc in 2D and 3D computer modelling of lithosphere dynamics, later moving to STFC in 2004 to change direction and start a career in the STFC e-Science Centre as a developer working across multiple scientific domains with a role to put research to work. David has built software for the UK National Grid Service (NGS), a national data and compute Grid federation for the UK research community, an ancestor of the modern day cloud. He became co-service manager and lead developer for a number of production e-infrastructure and security services in the EU including the Grid Operations Centre Database (GOCDB), a grid topology database and Identity and Access Management service for the European Grid Infrastructure (EGI.eu); and the UK e-Science Certification Authority (UKCA), a national service issuing digital certificates for the UK e-Research communities through a public key infrastructure (PKI), once the largest academic CA in the world. David currently leads the Hartree RSE team whose purpose is to unlock the high growth potential of advanced digital for UK industry. The RSE team has four core capabilities: 1) Applied HPC & AI, High-Throughput computing; 2) Full-Stack development & cloud DevOps including WebDev/UI/UX, cloud, services, security; 3) Data Engineering for building data intensive apps & pipelines including MLOps; 4) Digital Modernisation consultancy and Training. RSE works across the full dev life cycle from small ~3 month proof of concepts to multi-year production builds. David has built a grant portfolio as PI and co-PI totalling well over £10m.
