About David Misteli

David Misteli is a Postdoctoral Faculty Member in the Department of Art History at the University of Vienna. He studied art history, history, and image theory at the University of Basel, with semesters abroad at HU Berlin and the University of Glasgow. From 2015–2020 he held a position as Predoctoral Faculty Fellow at the Department of Art History at the University of Basel (with Ralph Ubl). 2017–2019 Doc.Mobility Fellow of the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) at the Centre allemand d’histoire de l’art in Paris and at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia; and from 2021-2023 SNSF Early Postdoc.Mobility Fellow at Universität der Künste Berlin where he also held the position of Visiting Professor for Art History in 2023. His dissertation "Expression and Mediality in van Gogh's Painting"(2021,"summa cum laude") won the 2022 Fakultätspreis der Philosophisch-Historischen Fakultät of the University of Basel, sponsored by the L. & Th. La Roche Foundation. His research and teaching concentrate on 19th and early 20th century European art with a particular focus on modernism in painting and drawing, notions of expression, authorship, and the theory and history of the connex between form and subjectivity in modern and contemporary art. Alongside, David is active as an author and art critic on positions and exhibitions of contemporary art.
