Background
About David Orser
I teach, develop, and promote courses for undergraduate engineering education. These courses leverage project-based learning, experiential learning, and active/flipped classrooms and are taught from high schools to graduate schools. I was awarded the Horace T. Morse-University of Minnesota Alumni Association Award for Outstanding Contributions to Undergraduate Education for my outreach efforts and for redeveloping the Electrical and Computer Engineer core curriculum and labs.I have more than ten years of industry experience in mixed-signal integrated circuit design and power electronics. At IBM and LSI (now Broadcom), I led the development of application-specific integrated circuits (ASIC), including preamplifiers for short-distance fiber optics and write drivers for hard disk drives. I have broad experience in all facets of the design process, including research, architecture specification, development, and ramp-to-manufacturing. My designs have been shipped in over a billion chips, with an aggregate bandwidth of over an exabyte per second. In Power Electronics, I built and tested experimental power electronic converters for adjustable speed drives with support for grid faults. I have also advised MISO on developing simulation models and economic justifications to support a trans-continental HVDC macro-grid using power electronic converters for improved reliability and value.Today, I leverage my industry time, course design experience, and strong ties to students to increase the number of scientists and engineers working in Minnesota and beyond.
