In recent years there has been a shift in biomedical research to a focus on translational research, meaning studying things in the laboratory that are more readily translated into improvements in clinical care. I am shifting this paradigm a bit by translating knowledge from my research career in pulmonary surfactant and lipid metabolism to one of civilizations most important agricultural products, olive oil. My background has given me an understanding of lipid biochemistry so I can actually understand many of the processes involved in olive oil production and olive oil analysis. We have formed Floros-Phelps, LLC to partner with our friends, the Vlachopoulos family, in a new endeavor. Floros-Phelps, LLC is currently working with Vlachopoulos S.A. from Kranidi, Argolida, Greece to introduce Argoladi Extra Virgin Olive Oil into the United States. Argoladi is a premium quality, early harvest olive oil prepared from a blend of Manaki and Koroneiki olives. The Manaki cultivar has unique qualities and it is grown primarily in the Argolida. Its limited distribution makes this a relatively unique blend and we are one of a very few suppliers in the US. The chemical and sensory analyses of Argoladi confirm its high quality.
