Background
About David Potter
David was an English teacher for over twelve years. His experience allowed him the opportunity to teach students from ages 8 through adulthood. However, from 2004 until January 4th of 2015 his classroom experience was at the high school level. Prior to becoming an Instructional Coach for 1.5 years, David used his time in the classroom to focus on teaching and learning more about teaching writing. The more students write, the more critical thinkers they become, but more importantly they learn their "Voice". Free writing is the foundation, because it gives people ownership of being able to delve deeper and discuss any topic at anytime when used correctly. On January 5, 2015 David became an Assistant Principal where he continued to build his capacity and learning opportunities. In order to make that jump, David completed his 2nd masters degree program in education administration. In preparation, he served as a member of the SBIT (Data Team), SBMT (Site Based Management Team), the senior class adviser, an ELA 3R and AP Language and Comp. teacher, an Instructional Coach, and when given the opportunity filled in as an administrator. He has been extensively trained on the CommonCore Learning Standards both in Albany and the local level. Also, he has turn keyed training both at the district and building level on CommonCore. As an ELA teacher David's primary focus was learning about how to teach English through communication, critical thinking, and creativity. He developed a comprehensive writing program that successfully prepared students for life. Research and experience illustrate that writing leads to greater success in the learning environment, improved self confidence, and enhanced reading skills. This practice prided itself on helping students find their voice and discover their own sense of excellence. As a Principal student learning, teacher learning, and constant improvement are the goals. Through the development of a comprehensive social and emotional support system, meeting both staff and students where they are at through equity, and providing daily analysis of data, meaning professional development opportunities, and informed decision making having a sustainable mission becomes possible.
