About David Ruby

I have made structural design and construction engineering my professional passion for over 50 years. As a project engineer for American Bridge, I learned the essential concepts that drive my design and construction engineering philosophy - a philosphy that emphasizes collaborative design with the inclusion of construction knowledge and experience, i.e, CONSTRUCTABILITY. This philosophy permeates the firm founded in 1984, Ruby+Associates, and continues to compel the firm’s delivery of structural engineering. I am a Professional or Structural Engineer registered in 39 states and I have also performed structural engineering on projects in Canada, Brazil, South Korea, Germany, Russia and Mexico. I was recently appointed to the Construction Science Research Foundation Board of Directors. I am the receiptent of the MSPE & ACEC/M 1998 Outstanding Individual Engineer in Private Practice Award, the 2004 CASE Past Chairman’s Award for outstanding contributions to the structural engineering profession and the community, the 2010 SEAMi Engineer of the Year for contributions to the profession and in 2011, the AISC Lifetime Achievement Award for contributions in the design, constructability and engineering of structural steel. Specialties: My passion is structural design, utilizing the concept of Constructability - the inclusion of construction knowledge and experience in the planning, design, procurement and construction to achieve overall project objectives. I have been active within ACEC, ASCE, CASE and NCSEA, as well as AISC and the structural steel construction industry it serves. I authored the AISC Constructability Design Guide No. 23, published in 2009, several articles on the topic and presented at industry conferences.
