About David Sabata

I am a professional archaeologist/cultural resources specialist with both private contractor and federal government experience on over 100 projects across the inter-mountain United States. My Master's research, conducted at the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument in southern Utah is an analysis of the relationships between springs, plants of traditional significance to Native tribes, and archaeology. This work has helped contribute to the growing awareness of water-sources as nuclei of traditional importance, as well as plants as culturally significant variables across the landscape surface, and how archaeology is patterned in relation to both. I have worked closely with Paiute, Hopi, and Navajo peoples, and have also documented cultural resources on the Ute, Apache, Cheyenne, and Arapahoe (Northern and Southern) reservations. The good stewardship of Indigenous heritage is a lifelong passion and I continue to read ethnographic literature to help better inform my archaeological inferences. In addition to archaeological work, I have assisted soils scientists, geologists, hydrologists, engineers, biologists, and ecological restoration professionals on a wide variety of projects throughout the western US.
