About David Satterfield
David Satterfield is the Interim Associate Vice President of Research and Director of Asset Development at West Virginia University. He is also a tenured Associate Professor in the School of Music. Within this current assignment, Mr. Satterfield focuses on building the manufacturing generally and specifically the defense industry in West Virginia. He regularly engages in community economic development initiatives throughout the region. In addition to his administrative duties, Mr. Satterfield had occasionally taught courses in the Entrepreneurship Studies Program in the Chambers College of Business and Economics and frequently works with individual students on a host of academic and career issues.David Satterfield served as the Executive Director of the West Virginia Development Office from October 2001 through January 2005. As such, he was responsible for four line divisions, focusing on building strong communities; recruiting new investment from around the United States and the world; strengthening and retaining existing industry, enhancing entrepreneurial opportunities and building small businesses. He chaired the board of directors and had oversight responsibility for the West Virginia Economic Development Authority, the lending arm of West Virginia’s economic development effort. Prior to joining the Development Office Mr. Satterfield served as the Chief of Staff and Vice President for Institutional Advancement at West Virginia University. In this capacity he functioned as chief advisor to the University president, David Hardesty, as West Virginia University’s primary government relations executive, coordinated the internal administration strategies of the institution, and spearheaded special initiatives. When Governor Bob Wise was elected, in November Satterfield served as director of the transition team. He continued this service until the inauguration in January 2001, at which time he became the Chief of Staff to the Governor until May 2001.Satterfield has been active in education reform since 1992, when he was appointed by then Governor Gaston Caperton to study post-secondary education in West Virginia as part of the Higher Education Advocacy Team (HEAT).Satterfield is a native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He earned two music degrees (BM and MM) from WVU and has been a faculty member in the College of Creative Arts at WVU since 1983.Satterfield and his wife, Beth, a faculty member (retired) in also at WVU, have two children, Keith and Allie.
