About David Schaaf

David is a Principal with Nichols Applied Management and has over twenty years of experience as a management consultant. He has gained a wide breadth of experience over his professional career that includes carrying out socio-economic assessments, conducting stakeholder engagement (including surveying), undertaking program and policy evaluations, developing demographic models and associated population projections, preparing business cases, and leading strategic planning exercises. As a result of this experience, David has excellent report preparation and writing skills, qualitative and quantitative analytical skills, strong interviewing and facilitation skills, as well as the ability to synthesize and analyze large amounts of information and communicate the relevant findings of this analysis in an easy-to-understand format. Mr. Schaaf provides consulting services to a broad range of both public and private sector clients, including: Alberta Advanced Education, Alberta Community and Social Services, Alberta Health, Alberta Labour, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Suncor Energy, Syncrude Canada, Shell Canada, Total Canada, Teck Resources, TC Energy, the Oil Sands Community Alliance (OSCA), Apex Utilities Inc, City of Edmonton, Calgary Economic Development, Edmonton Global, the Town of Pincher Creek, the Conklin Resource Development Advisory Committee, and Northlands. David has particular expertise in carrying out socio-economic assessments. He has been involved in roughly 30 different impact assessments for various types of projects including mines, SAGD, hydro-electric, wind generation, and road-building projects across Alberta and well beyond. As part of this work, he has carried out analysis on the economic effects of these projects (e.g. workforce and income effects), quantified the effects on community infrastructure and services (e.g. health services, education, etc.), and assessed changes in social conditions and community wellbeing (e.g. social and cultural conditions). In several instances Mr. Schaaf not only carried out the work himself but oversaw others in carrying it out. David has also appeared as an expert witness on socio-economic issues before both provincial and federal/provincial regulatory review boards.
