I love innovation, but more than that, I love protecting it. You just need to look at the world’s most successful companies to appreciate how important the protection of intellectual property (IP) is to a business’s health, value and sustainability. If this were not so, they would not so vigorously protect it. Many businesses are built primarily on their patent protection. Many of the world’s leading brands are worth billions of dollars. But even for a new start-up or small business, protecting its IP can mean the difference between success and failure, profit and loss. I’ve been in the patent and trade mark attorney business for over 20 years. In a former life, I worked as a mechanical and design engineer and engineering project manager. I started my current firm, Ascot Martin, a number of years ago. Although its sounds a bit trite, it was very important to me to provide an ethical, quality service to my clients, for a reasonable price. And it still is! I have been told that I tend to be a bit of a perfectionist. When it comes to IP protection, I don’t think that is a bad thing, and I have found that it produces results.
