About David Spencer

I fell into teaching a decade ago while working for a media analysis firm and doing postgraduate study. I found I very much enjoy it, and have been engaged in it ever since, teaching a wide range of communication and research focused units, some with 200+ students, others catering exclusively to an international cohort. In the past few years, I've also convened several units in media production, including video editing and sound design. This opportunity has tapped into skills and interests from my undergraduate degree in theatre/media and experience in community radio, scriptwriting, and playing gigs and recording with bands (the first decent paying job I had). Teaching media production means engaging with enthusiastic students of the craft, honing understanding and skills, keeping up with rapidly evolving tools and practices in content creation in digital media. The job - except for those weekends of concentrated marking - is a pleasure. In other roles on campus I’ve developed study skills materials for the uni, run a faculty-based learning resource centre, and facilitated cross-faculty workshops on research methodology for PhD candidates. Recently I was employed to develop a unit for the 2019 curriculum for the University of Canberra's Faculty of Arts and Design.
