About David Stein

My name is David and I'm a writer and producer based in Cape Town. I have an Honours degree (achieved with distinction) in English and Film Studies, and qualifications in scriptwriting, digital filmmaking and stop-frame animation. I recently completed my Masters degree in Screenwriting, achieved with distinction. My thesis screenplay was an award-winner at the London Film Awards, and received an endorsement from the United Nations for its value to the field of tolerance education. In 2023 my short film screenplay "Communion" was a finalist in the International Screenwriting Competition (ISC), selected from over 1800 entries worldwide. In early 2024 my feature screenplay "The Buchenwald Bear" was an ISC award-winner for Outstanding Achievement in Writing. I have worked for over 20 years as a writer, script editor and producer/project manager for film, television, social media and digital marketing. I have written, produced and directed short films for SAB Miller, the Royal Commonwealth Society and the Durban International Film Festival. I recently served as Executive Producer for Red Bull Media House South Africa, and my stage plays have won awards at local and international festivals. I have tutored and lectured both locally and internationally, which has included tertiary-level teaching in China. In this capacity I also focused on curriculum development, and the writing of textbooks and other study materials. I formed part of the production team for the first Big Brother South Africa, was the story writer for Supa Strikas (the world’s largest circulating comic book), and worked as a volunteer journalist in Kathmandu, Nepal. As a writer, producer and project manager, my clients have included Sanlam, Old Mutual, Totalsports, Jeep Apparel, General Motors, Vodacom, Woolworths and Disney.
