Safety is a Mindset - each person has to set their mind to assuring that whatever they are doing, they are doing it as safely as that task can be done. My biggest test on that idea was a few years ago. Since my teenage years, I’ve wanted to go skydiving. Unfortunately, a variety of different situations kept me from ever going. But even thrill-seekers and outdoor adventurists can perform dangerous tasks as safely as they can. Shooting guns is dangerous when gun safety isn’t implemented…rock climbing is as well. And every other dangerous function can be done with all the safety measures in place. So, I did it. I “jumped” out of a perfectly good airplane, ON PURPOSE. And with all the safety and redundant safety built into that industry, fully explained and understood by my Safety Manager self, I had a wonderful time, lived to tell about it, and then went back for more a few years later…with the same safety mindset and processes implemented, the second time was even better than the first! So my point and Bottom line is, YOU are your own best Safety Manager. No OSHA regulation or company policy can make sure you go home every day better than your own mindset to make it happen!
