About David Stofer

David Stofer is the founder of Mariner Retirement Advisors and serves as its president. He is responsible for ensuring the delivery of quality retirement planning services to clients. With a focus on plan design, compliance and in-depth investment monitoring, David uses proprietary tools to analyze retirement plan performance and determine the most effective way for clients’ employees to maximize their retirement benefits. He also consults on a wide range of issues related to mergers and acquisitions (M&A) and advises clients on the impact a corporate transaction may have on retirement benefits. David has more than 30 years of experience in the retirement plan business and more than 10 years of experience advising on mergers and acquisitions. He specializes in 401(k), 403(b) and defined benefit plans and also has experience with nonqualified deferred compensation plans. Prior to founding Mariner Retirement Advisors, David was a principal at SageView Advisory, where he focused on helping plan sponsors meet their fiduciary obligations. He began his career as an administrator, drafting adoption agreements, filing 5500s and conducting discrimination testing. Recognizing a need for better retirement plan and investment monitoring, David developed Fiduciary Investment Reporting Manager (FIRM), an investment monitoring tool that is now used by more than 900 advisors serving more than plan sponsors. David has a bachelor’s degree in finance and business administration from Kansas State University and is a trustee of the Kansas State University Foundation. He is an Accredited Investment Fiduciary, is registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission, and has passed the Series 7, 24, 63 and 65 exams. In 2008, David Stofer was recognized as one of the most successful retirement plan advisors by Plan Sponsor Magazine. In 2009 and 2010, he was recognized as one of the 300 Most Influential Advisors in Defined Contribution by The 401k Wire.
