My body broke at mile 21 last year running a marathon and I fell like a bowling pin. From my neck to my big toe, every muscle completely seized. I crawled over to the paramedic who gave me some salt pills and doused me in muscle relaxant cream. You can imagine the story from here–I hobbled on and finished the race. If only that were the end of it. 25 doctor’s visits later, down to a brain MRI and cognitive tests, I scoured for explanations for not only the seized legs, but the brain fog, double vision, HRV swings and digestion haywire. After no conclusive diagnosis, I had to ask: was my body-mind irrevocably broken? As a knowledge worker, my mind is my livelihood. Losing my mental edge and my sanity was terrifying. I would have done or paid anything to get a better picture of my mind and recenter it. And all the brain scan said was that I didn’t have any tumors. It was many months of oscillating between feeling like a vegetable and seeing brief sparks of my former self. At first, I felt like a buoy in the middle of the Pacific Ocean getting hit by tidal wave after tidal wave. Slowly I was able to anchor down my nervous system. It took some scuba diving, hours long chanting meditation sessions, and a journey into neuroscience to unpack the mechanisms that no doctor or psychologist had a pulse on. The invisible crisis of mental health is everywhere. For years I’ve seen mission-driven founders push themselves to their wit's end, and I’ve coached many through dark periods. As I came out of my own battle, I’ve determined that empathy, coaching and guesswork are not enough. We need a better, more scientific way to measure and regulate brain health. We need to bridge a neuroanatomical approach with cognitive training and performance psychology.
