About David Wheeler

My current research interests are in harnessing the power of digital technologies to enable transformation of the bioeconomy. The agrifood sector is characterised by multiple stakeholders operating in multiple data ecosystems. An underlying hypothesis is that democratisation of data, with the underlying pillars of interoperability, data quality and security and sharing, will enhance innovation and transformation within the agrifood sectors. The long-term target is that users select the ‘right ‘information to answer ‘their’ questions to ‘their’ level of satisfaction to meet ‘their’ aspirations. This has the potential to align better with Māori aspirations but provides challenges to the way we deliver our science. Within this spectrum, my primary interest is in data quality, how data of different qualities can be used to achieve the target, and the ability to quantify data quality– can FAIR and CARE principles, along with uncertainty, reliability and bias be incorporated into a Data Health Index. My earlier work focused on the effect of lime of pasture, aluminium toxicity, and farm system modelling, particularly incorporating nutrient budgeting and LCA analysis to farm gate.
