About David Whiteman

I am a cancer epidemiologist with a 20-plus year research career. I am internationally recognised for my research into the causes, prevention and control of cancer, particularly those of the skin and gastrointestinal tracts. My research activity has resulted in more than 300 career publications, mostly in my specialty areas of sunlight & skin cancer and oesophageal cancer. Since completing my PhD in 1997, I have won competitive funding totalling more than $50 million as Chief Investigator, including more than $17 million as Principal/Lead Investigator. The latter includes major grants from the US National Institutes of Health, Cancer Councils and National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia.My research findings have been translated into policy and practice, and I have held leadership positions in national and international research committees and policy forums. The latter includes chairing the Fellowships Committee of the International Agency for Research on Cancer and chairing the national working group that developed the “Clinical Practice Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Management of Barrett’s Oesophagus and Early Oesophageal Adenocarcinoma” for Cancer Council Australia. My research excellence has been acknowledged through awards such as Fellowship of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences (2015), the Fulbright Senior Scholarship (2006), Young Tall Poppy Award (2001) and the Nuffield Fellowship to the University of Oxford (1997).My publications listed in PubMed can be found here: & dispmax=200My Google Scholar profile can be found here: & hl=en
