I have recently completed my BSc in Honours Marine Biology at Dalhousie University. For my undergraduate thesis, I investigated sperm whale residency across temporal scales off the Galápagos Islands from 2013-2022 in the Whitehead Lab. Using the cloud-based photoidentification tool, FlukeBook, photographs of Galápagos sperm whale flukes were examined to distinguish between individuals and suggest potential match candidates across days and years. This study allowed for a better understanding of whether Galápagos sperm whales photo-identified during the cultural turnover in the were still present in the same region in 2022. This study also aided in building the sperm whale catalogue on FlukeBook to help detect long-range movements across regions through matches with catalogues created by colleagues across the world.
