About Dean Whitehead

I commenced at Federation University (Brisbane Campus) in January 2022. University of Tasmania (Tasmania) 2020 to 2021. Flinders University (Adelaide) 2015 to 2019 - after 10-years in New Zealand (Massey University) and the UK prior to that. I have a national/international reputation in my specialist fields of health promotion and health education theory, policy and practice – within and outside the nursing disciplines. I am an active researcher and publisher where my main focus lies with health promotion and health education theory and practice, health policy, public health and primary health care. I have close to 200 theoretical/research publications in these fields. My research/publications have a high impact and reputation in the research and professional community. For instance, in terms of citation, my research is widely read and cited nationally and internationally. As of 24/01/2021 (when this biography was last updated) Google Scholar reports 4,225 citations, a h-index of 37 and an i-index of 58. My main academic media source is ResearchGate (RG) I have close to a million reads and downloads 2,485 citations and a h-index of 30. On Academia.Edu, I have 29,600 reads/downloads and ranked in the top 0.5%. I have 3,150 followers on LinkedIn. I sit/have sat on several international Executive Editorial / Advisory Journal Boards, including the Journal of Clinical Nursing, Nurse Education Today, International Journal of Orthopaedic and Trauma Nursing and ISRN – Nursing (International Scholarly Research Network). I am also an Associate Editor for BMC Public Health and Associate Editor of The Open Nursing Journal. I also have extensive experience of reviewing and advising for 40+ international journal review panels. I have co-authored/edited three editions (2007, 2013, 2016) of a top-selling and cited Elsevier Australasian Nursing and Midwifery research text and I am the Lead Editor for the latest 6th edition - published in June 2020. I am also co-editor of a recent successful Cambridge University Press second edition text on community and primary health care – with the third edition released in January 2021. My current research focus lies with Australian-based health promotion projects that explore issues related to settings-based health promotion networks. I am a national Board Member of the Australian Health Promotion Association (AHPA). My PhD was an epistemology of health promotion as it related to clinical theory, policy and practice issues.
