About Debbie Markey

Deborah Markey became the Executive Director of the Houston Arboretum & Nature Center in 2005. In her tenure with the organization, she has managed the Arboretum’s business operations effectively to ensure a strong positive bottom line and has tripled the organization’s income, resulting in increased community visibility and organizational capacity. Ms. Markey has refined the Arboretum’s Mission, Vision, and Strategic Plan and formulated cohesive, attainable goals that have allowed the organization to grow not only in income and breadth of program offerings, but in ability to serve underprivileged children and families across the city of Houston. Currently Ms. Markey serves as a trustee at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in the museum district. Prior to her career at the Arboretum, she was a community leader in the Houston Heights. Proficient at fundraising, including grant writing, she raised millions of dollars over a 20 year period. She also instigated, organized and spearheaded many projects that have highly impacted the Houston Heights community. She remains a resident of the Houston/Woodland Heights for the past 30 years and remains active.
