About Deborah Heck

As Dean of the School of Education and Tertiary Access at the University of the Sunshine Coast, I lead transformative change across teacher education, enabling programs, and lifelong learning pathways. My leadership is focused on building inclusive, future-oriented learning environments that drive student success, strengthen research culture, and respond to community and national priorities. With more than 30 years of experience across higher education I have a proven record of delivering sustainable growth, fostering strong industry and government partnerships, and advancing education policy reform. I am passionate about expanding access to high-quality education, particularly for underrepresented communities, and about aligning research and teaching to real-world challenges. As Chair of the Queensland Council of Deans of Education, I advocate for the teaching profession and help shape state and national policy through collaboration with unions, employers, and government. I also actively contribute to national discussions through roles with the Australian Council of Deans of Education and AITSL. A strong believer in collaborative leadership, equity, and innovation, I aim to create educational ecosystems where staff and students thrive, supported by research-led practice, inclusive curriculum design, and meaningful engagement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
