Background
About Deborah Sosower
Born in North Carolina, Deborah Sosower (she/her) attended Bryn Mawr College and studied at the Lorenzo de’Medici School of Art in Florence, Italy. She obtained her MFA from Pratt Institute in 2009. She spent 6 years in Atlanta, GA, where she was one of the inaugural Walthall Fellows (2012-2013) through WonderRoot; worked as volunteer, facilitator and Program Manager at C4 Atlanta; and monitored, taught and ultimately served as Board President of the Atlanta Printmakers Studio. She has incorporated her print studio and uses her 100-year-old letterpress, Orion, for printing invitations and ephemera, as well as graphic design skills for area nonprofits. In the spring of 2014, she started as a part-time Assistant Professor at Kennesaw State University, teaching all levels of printmaking as well as art foundation courses including Drawing 1; 2D Design & Color Theory; Concept, Creativity and Studio Practice; and Art Appreciation. From 2015-2018, she served on the Board and worked for SGC International as web coordinator, registration coordinator and conference co-chair of the 2017 and 2018 SGCI Conferences. Previously director of marketing & communications at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts, Deborah is currently senior director of marketing & communications at Future Generations University. Deborah Sosower is an emerging artist who uses diverse forms of printmaking, performative and casting mediums in her exploration of unconventional approaches to self-portraiture and self-escapism. Her pieces reflect either an emotional reaction to the representation of her body or the codification of her fears. She illustrates these themes through the veiling and abstraction of her body to express the violence of physical pain in large-scale relief prints and through the use of dark humor to create ironic, violent narrations that battle her emotional anxieties in performance, sculptures & serographs. Deborah has exhibited primarily in Philadelphia, New York, North Carolina and Atlanta.
