Background

About Deborah Stanley

I am a self-taught polymer clay artist. Creating art is a joyful experience and a great mental escape for me. My career as an artist began humbly at my kitchen table with some blocks of polymer clay and an idea for a project to keep my son occupied for an afternoon. However, I found an immediate connection with the colors and feel of polymer clay and began what has become a fifteen year journey of study and exploration which continues today with no end in sight. My primary motivation in creating art has always been to simply express what I'm feeling at the time through the use of dramatic expression, action, or various patterns and combinations of colors All of my works are composed entirely of polymer clay. Some pieces are coated with a clear gloss acrylic finish for protection and color enhancement. My goal with each piece I create is to capture the viewer's attention. What I want from the viewer beyond that varies greatly, depending on the piece being viewed. For example, works such as "Joyful Celebration" and "Up, Up and Away", use simple figures and lively colors to invoke happy feelings in the viewer through the freedom and spontaneity they express. Works such as "Warrior Chief","Spirit of a Cowboy", and "Rare Essence" strive to communicate emotion through facial expressions or posture of the subject."Bipolar Blues","Colored Girl", and "You're as Big as a House" seek to have the viewer see things through the eyes of those that many in society may take for granted. Finally, some works are abstracts created with the purpose of asking the viewer to use their imagination and discover what it is in the piece that they see or feel.
