About Deborah Thomas

I have over 10 years of experience as a hydrogeological consultant where I use my technical expertise to support companies in developing their sites in as unintrusive manner as possible in respect to the water environs. This includes working within a wide range of sectors such as minerals, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, bottled water and construction. My work includes increasing the understanding of the water processes occurring on sites; obtaining the relevant permits/licences for water related activities; and supporting the adaptation of working practices to reduce water usage or contamination. As a specialist field, hydrogeology isn’t always the top of the careers wish list! For me, it started after developing a love and fascination for the natural world as a child; I decided to study Geology at University, focusing on geological processes and mineral resources. During this degree I realised that freshwater itself was an undervalued, finite resource on the planet, which wasn’t being discussed within my geology course. I began researching into groundwater as an extension of my geology degree, and my drive and desire to better understand the technical aspects of groundwater and its interaction with the wider environment led me to study Hydrogeology as an MSc. I am an active member of the Geological Society of London and the Institute of Quarrying where I value the connections and contacts which can be made via these societies with my wider technical/industrial community. I am very people oriented. One of my key skills that I have developed through my career is my ability to explain sometimes complex hydrogeological problems in a simple digestible manner for clients, contractors or regulators, highlighting the key issues and providing adequate, but not over-the-top technical details to obtain the desired outcome.
