About Deepesh Giri

I am a PhD graduate in Mechanical Engineering from Mississippi State University (MSU). My research was primarily aimed at studying plasticity due to twinning in Hexagonal Close Packed (HCP) materials and using informatics to understand material properties. Currently, I am working as an Assistant Professor at Long Island University, Brooklyn. In both my PhD and post-doc work, I worked in the field of computational materials science. My work involved collecting materials data, cleaning, and analyzing them and looking for exciting properties. Using Machine Learning (ML), I tried to build predictive model for different material properties with the help of available material descriptors. This has sharpened my programming skills in Matlab and Python and broadened my statistical knowledge. I also used Natural Language Processing (NLP) to collect data from large number of journal articles to create a structured database of materials. To sum up, I take advantage of materials informatics for the development of new materials.
