About Deirdre Casey

I’m an educator and researcher passionate about student engagement and mathematics education. Currently, I work in AnSEO – The Student Engagement Office at Munster Technological University, where I coordinate the Academic Learning Centre. Since 2020, I’ve focused on making learning support more accessible, especially during the rapid shift to online education. My reflections on this transition are captured in my paper Emergency pivot to online academic learning support: crisis or opportunity, and I continue to explore ways to enhance student support in an evolving academic landscape. Beyond my work in learning support, I’m particularly interested in student-staff partnerships. I’ve been fortunate to collaborate with colleagues across the UK and Ireland, in an academic book club and contributing to research on partnership in higher education. Our team has presented at conferences, published research, and organised an online workshop through Teaching and Learning Mathematics Online (TALMO). At my core, I love teaching mathematics—especially helping students who find it challenging. My teaching experience spans higher and secondary education, including lecturing at Griffith College Cork. I hold an MSc in Mathematical Modelling and Scientific Computing from UCC, a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (for second level), and a Special Purpose Award in Training and Education (for third level). Before moving into education, I worked in industry in Research & Development and Quality Control, experiences that still influence my approach to teaching and learning. I’m always eager to learn, collaborate, and find new ways to make education more engaging and supportive for students.
