Background
About Del Leu
A well-traveled geographer, Del has over 25 years of professional GIS experience with a strong background in transportation and land-use planning, telecom, CAD, IT and web programming. He has managed several successful GIS projects with billings of more than $1 million. After earning bachelor's and master’s degrees in Geography, Del moved to Portland, Oregon, and joined Parsons Brinckerhoff (now WSP) consultants where he spent 10 years as a GIS Analyst and Transportation Planner. He then spent two years with PB in Seattle working on several Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) projects. In 2006, Del became the GIS Manager for Otak, a 400-employee engineering consulting firm based in Portland. Over the next five years at Otak he oversaw 50 ArcGIS users and led the GIS work on several large land-use planning projects in the U.S. and U.A.E, including the $6 million DMaP project in Abu Dhabi. He was also Otak's lead web programmer. Del moved to Doha, Qatar, in 2013 and joined Atkins Engineering as a Senior GIS Analyst in the 120-person Central Planning Office, where he worked for three years on a range of transportation projects. After returning to Portland in 2016, he joined Metro, the regional planning agency for Portland, and in 2023 he became a GIS Project Manager for the telecom engineering firm, CTC Energy and Technology, where he currently works. Always a curious geographer, Del has wandered around America more than anyone you'll probably ever meet. In 2016 he became the first person to visit all 16 extreme geographic compass points of the contiguous U.S, as he described on his website, ExtremeGeographer.com. Before that, in 2001, he created one of the world's first travel/photo blogs, DelsJourney.com. He loves to travel and, through his writings, enjoys sharing his peripatetic experiences with others.
