About Delano Burrowes

I’m a Brooklyn writer, poet, and multidisciplinary artist. I’m originally from Great Barrington, MA, also the hometown of W.E.B. Du Bois, and much of my work explores Du Bois’s concept of Black double consciousness. My writing has been published in HuffPost, The Rumpus, and Quarto Magazine, among other places. My HuffPost article about gentrification in Bedstuy, Brooklyn was read by over one million and got over comments between HuffPost and Yahoo. My performance art has been shown at the Brooklyn Library, GoggleWorks Center for the Arts, the Museum of Modern Art (unsanctioned ), and a collaborative piece at the International Human Rights Art Festival. My ongoing traveling public art and community discussion series, The Great Barrington Project, asks participants how they see ( or don’t see ) Blackness. I’m the 2024 Artist in Residency at BAM ( Brooklyn Academy of Music ) and my project is about Black “respectability” and what that even means. I’m also the co-founder and vice-chair of the Blackyard Collective, a nonprofit that works on creating connection and support for Black queer folks experiencing addiction. I gave the 2023 W.E.B. Du Bois Lecture at Simon’s Rock College and spoke about the myth of the authentic voice. I have worked as a racial justice coordinator with the Berkshires non profit Multicultural Bridge, helping implement discussion about inequity in education housing, addiction treatment etc. I currently study African Diaspora history at Columbia University.
