The great playgrounds have a hidden plan. They are places of joy, places to strive, places to discover and create. The playgrounds are where the great innovations begin. Technology is the playground of our time. With technology we test our tools, we fight our limitations, we create new artifacts. We solve problems that bedeviled generations before us and we speed the growth of empires and build the fortunes of enterprises. The litany of technologies that have transformed our lives is too familiar to recite here. But you ain’t seen nothing yet. What’s coming will change us again and again. I have been privileged to participate in the migration of tech products from the playground to the boardroom to the factory floor and the hospital wing and the analyst’s cubicle. I know the joy of creation and I have reaped the reward of success. We all grew up with a vision of Dave talking to Hal in the Space Odyssey, and Captain Kirk barking “Computer, where are the Romulans now?”. We expect to talk to our computers. We expect them to understand what we mean and what we need. We expect them to answer. This vision prevails in certain arenas, but it has not yet made it to retail, government services, practice management, inventory, accounting, medicine or education. But that day is coming. The technologists are working on it and the outlines of their success are becoming clear. Business visionaries are talking about it.
