About Dennis Simmons
I paint monochromatic as I believe it represents a realistic view of both the subject matter and of life itself. Color, as amazine, dazzling and beautiful as it is sometimes masks our outlook and peoples perception of truth. As the world is not black and white, nor is it all multicolors and full color palettes. Life is shades of grey and I believe my style of painting defines those values by pushing the contrast of dark and light and all those variations in between, which heightens the drama. I look at my paintings as windows to the past, to a simpler time. I've been greatly influenced by vintage photography where the photographer had to use skill to bring a photograph to life by the use of light and shadow and did not have the luxury of vivid colors to dazzel. My vintage palettes used "en plein air" give the paintings an historical effect especially when using old subject matter. Essentially, I 'am giving the viewer a duality between traditional oil painting and vintage photography through economy of color.
