About Dennis Smith

Mr. Smith is the Planner-in-Residence at FSU's Department of Urban and Regional Planning. He serves as the Director of the Mark & Marianne Barnebey Planning and Development Lab where he is responsible for securing and guiding graduate student studio projects, teaching planning classes, and supporting related community service endeavors. He has twenty seven years of planning experience in the public and private sector. Prior to joining the Department Mr. Smith served as the Growth Management Coordinator for the Florida Department of Transportation and was responsible for providing guidance, outreach and technical assistance to district office staff on critical transportation-related growth management and planning issues. Prior to joining FDOT, Mr. Smith spent 12 years in the private sector with Atkins, NA, where he managed scores of disaster recovery and emergency planning projects nationwide. Before joining Atkins, Mr. Smith served as the disaster recovery program administrator for the Florida Division of Emergency Management, with oversight of $2.2 billion in projects. He has extensive experience managing state and federal grant programs and a thorough knowledge of laws relating to land use, transportation, public safety, and disaster recovery.
