About Derek Anderson

Over the past decade, I’ve taught biology and microbiology at institutions including Georgetown University, George Mason University, and multiple community colleges. I design and deliver lab-based and online instruction that helps learners build confidence with scientific techniques, procedures, and tools. My teaching has been recognized by both students and colleagues, including earning the 'Excellence in Teaching and/or Mentorship Award' from Georgetown University’s M.S. in Biotechnology Program and the 'Excellence in Teaching Award' from Georgetown’s M.S. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Program.My laboratory training includes hands-on experience in molecular diagnostics, academic instruction, and laboratory education. My work has included next-generation sequencing (NGS), SNP microarray analysis, PCR-based assays, and microbial characterization across both clinical and instructional settings.In addition to teaching, I’ve contributed to scientific writing through peer-reviewed publications, laboratory manual development, and capstone project advising. I hold a certification in Molecular Biology from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), reflecting my experience in regulated, standards-based environments.I’m especially interested in roles that allow me to create structured, engaging content around complex systems. Whether guiding students through experimental design or supporting professionals learning new lab methods, I focus on clarity, consistency, and learner success. I’m drawn to opportunities where training, applied science, and communication come together to support people doing important work.
