As a Certified Customs Specialist (CCS) designate, my focus is on customs and regulatory compliance. An average day for me involves assessing manifested shipments entering the country, checking for permissibility, reviewing customs documents, determining whether shipments should be assessed for duties and taxes, assigning the shipments to customs brokers for clearance, physically handling those shipments once they arrive and presenting them to border services officers to review as needed - all while working with both internal and external customers to expedite clearance and provide guidance when requested. Every day presents a unique challenge, and I like that. My job satisfaction comes from building relationships, solving problems, and finding opportunities to pursue individual development. I have benefitted from diverse experiences which allow me to fit into a variety of roles as a leader or support figure. While most of my recent experience has been behind a computer, I am comfortable in a more active role and don't mind getting my hands dirty. In fact, my current position is a hybrid role that sees me splitting time between warehouse and office work. In the future, I hope to find myself in a role that will allow me to continue supporting and engaging both internal and external customers. Whether that's in administration, customs brokerage, customer service, logistics, sales or elsewhere is less important to me than my fit within a company's culture. Though I appreciate all forms of learning and often seek them out, I prefer to learn by observing the habits of my most successful and supportive colleagues. To that end, I hope that I will continue to be surrounded by dynamic leaders and other esteemed co-workers whom I can learn from, and hopefully, help in my own way.
