I love numbers! Excel is a terrific tool for me to apply that interest to analysis and other accounting functions, particularly using formulas, filters and macros to improve efficiency and accuracy in my own role; or problem solve and build rapport by doing it with or for a colleague. I got my first job pushing trolleys with Safeway when I was fifteen, worked hard there for many years in many roles and put myself through university. My first accounting job was obtained by cold calling companies in the Yellow Pages, landing in a small public accounting practice helping with BAS and tax preparation. I have since accrued over nineteen years accounting experience including eight in manufacturing where I enjoy that roles aren’t just office based but involve getting out in the factory to know the people and understand the processes, especially if I’m costing products. My learning style is very hands on and I combine this with sufficient academic ability, natural curiosity and initiative to quickly learn and apply in areas I haven’t previously encountered. I have not started CPA but am open to it if I get a long term role with a supportive employer.
