About Derek Calkins

Focused,driven and often persevering - I strive to excel, each and everyday. My Grandfather (Darreld K. Calkins - USAF Retired - Deceased) was a Pilot, with an Engineering Degree in Aerospace. I believe he passed down to me many things - from the technical mindset to the strong work ethic, also the focus of always doing what is right. For over 20 years I have been in the Oil & Gas Industry, starting out as a Helper/Laborer working Shut Downs and Turnarounds in the Gulf Region (TX/LA). Through the years I have developed the Skill & Discipline needed for forward momentum - and also to think "Outside of the box"- as it is easy to fall victim in doing what everyone else is doing.and they are doing that because "That's what everyone else is doing".But, it doesn't always mean that it is right! From the trenches I have risen to be a very skilled and disciplined asset to the companies I have worked for, bringing my best efforts to the table every time. I must contribute my skill building to the ones that took the time to show me things, explain the details and demonstrate patience with me.as I like to ask questions, can get very deeply involved with projects-Because with a strong work ethic Integrity is key! Outside of my career I do live life on the edge.and with passion! Super Bike Road Racing is in my blood and if you know what I am talking about, you also know that it never fades or diminishes.it's infinite! I race Super Bikes at speeds upwards of 200mph, carving my way through curves & turns with my knees and sometimes elbows pinned to the ground, the bike leaning over in ways that make most people cringe and gasp. Crazy-No way. Monumental-Absolutely! There are simply no words that can accurately describe how it feels to be at one with a machine that could take your life with one minor mistake. It's not the danger that thrills me.this has been my calling from day one!
