About Derek Chewka

My practice and philosophy are geared toward bringing Western and Indigenous knowledge together in practice. Hundreds of years of oppressive practices that have tried to kill the Indian child identity are now coming to meet their end. Canada's First Nations people are rising up. It is time for Truth and Reconciliation to be put into action. I am honored and excited to be joining the Yellowhead Tribal Council as the new Director of Child and Family Services. For the next few years, I will be working with three of the Nations of YTC in assisting them and empowering them - to create a service delivery model of services that restore the balance that once was. Children will live healthy lives and families will become stronger thus eliminating the need for children to ever be taken away from their community. And for those who have left, we will shine the light ever so brightly so that you can find your way back home.
