About Derek Curtis

My name is Derek Curtis and I received my M.S. in atmospheric and oceanic sciences from the University of Wisconsin in August of 2023 and my B.S. in General Studies with concentrations in atmospheric science, mathematics, and wind energy in May 2022 from Texas Tech University. I have worked as a meteorologist and operations control specialist for Survival Flight since August of 2023. Many core responsibilities of my position include risk mitigation, communication, the ability to work under high-stress scenarios, and a clear understanding of many airspaces and regulations. Along with these is a firm understanding of our atmosphere to maintain the safety of our flight crews. We provide morning briefings to all of our pilots to advise of any atmospheric conditions of concern and actively monitor all hazards to flights, be they weather-related or not. We also serve as the point of contact with various hospitals and emergency service agencies across the country for flight requests.
