About Derek Gamboa

Derek is currently serving as Associate Counsel for ATUM, a leading biotechnology and bio-engineering company in the San Francisco Bay Area. Derek executes an array of corporate transactions and assists with regulatory compliance, including applicable data privacy law. Prior to ATUM, Derek completed his Master of Laws degree in Intellectual Property Law at Santa Clara University, where he completed a full course load that included but was not limited to, Technology Licensing, Entertainment Transactions, Cybersecurity Law, and Internet Law. Previous to his venture into California, Derek served as a pool attorney through the Public Defender of New Jersey. As a solo practitioner, Derek also advised small businesses and entrepreneurs on corporate and intellectual property issues. It is this experience assisting small businesses and entrepreneurs, that motivated Derek to transition his focus onto Intellectual Property Law. Derek served as the Judicial Law Clerk in the Criminal Division for the Honorable Paul X. Escandon J.S.C. Prior to this, Derek served the now-retired, Honorable Thomas F. Scully J.S.C. From this role, as well as through his responsibilities tackling issues of first impression stemming from the New Jersey Bail Reform Act, Derek gained a strong grounding in analyzing issues stemming from newly enacted legislation. Derek's experience was dynamic, allowing him to transition seamlessly into a solo-practitioner role. Prior to legal practice, Derek attended the Charlotte School of Law, where he served as President of the Asian Pacific American Law Student Association. Derek also served as a Student Attorney for the Charlotte Intellectual Property Clinic, where he assisted start-up businesses and entrepreneurs in getting their innovations and ideas off the ground.
