About Derek Gray

I am currently a junior at the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University majoring in operations management. I have developed strong professional skills in problem-solving, organization, leadership, and communication through my experiences listed below. My leadership training began in high school when I was working to become an Eagle Scout. I had to execute a volunteer project and lead a team to complete it. I got more leadership experience my junior year, when I was elected as captain of the swim team. I was tasked with team management, meaning that I had to plan events, keep teammates accountable for being at practice, and making sure my team was keeping up with their course load. Communication was a vital role in this position. Since starting at Costco, in November of 2018, I have broadened my problem-solving skills in the workplace. As a merchandiser, I was tasked with designing product layouts that could effectively draw consumers towards the freezer section. I also performed inventory analysis to relay to my manager which items sold the most and the least. I also streamlined a system of tracking the dates of fresh goods to minimize waste from products going out of date. Keeping the freezer organized was vital to being successful in my position. With items constantly coming in and needing to rotate the stock, without solid organization I would not have succeeded. As a junior, I am coming to the end of my college career and looking more into my future. I am looking for a job that will expose me to challenges that require me to enhance my problem-solving skills.
