About Derek Layo

I currently work as a Logistics Category Manager for Freshpet, who manufactures, distributes, and markets natural fresh meals and treats for dogs and cats in the United States, Canada, and Europe. In this role, I develop and execute strategic supply chain initiatives to enhance current operations and to enable future growth.~ I am a graduate of Penn State University, University Park, with a degree in Supply Chain Management and focus on Information Systems Management. Prior to graduating, I completed a seven month Procurement Execution co-op position at United Technologies (now Raytheon Technologies), a Fortune 100 company. Through this opportunity I was exposed to purchasing processes and a number of projects for the castings/forgings/machine made commodities within the aerospace division. I began my full-time career at United States Cold Storage (a leader in the food warehousing/transportation industry) in their three year leadership development program. The program contained four experiences, each being nine months in length - Logistics Systems, Logistics Analytics, Operations, and Carrier Development. Following the completion of the program, I was hired as a Carrier Management Specialist. In this role, I lead National RFP efforts, procured carriers for all outbound transportation regions, and ensured carrier compliance with all set processes and expectations.
