About Derek McPhatter

Derek has been working with mission-driven organizations for fifteen years, implementing resource development strategies for arts, community, education and public policy programs. As a VP with Latz & Company, he brings his talents in organizational development and fundraising to help non-profit organizations reach their potential. Derek’s passion for the arts led to a five-year tenure at Harlem’s Apollo Theater Foundation, Inc, supporting the theater’s evolution into a dynamic 21st century performing arts organization. As Associate Director of Institutional Giving, Derek managed the theater’s corporate, foundation and public sector solicitation strategies for a suite of new programs, capital renovations and special projects. His work led to a thirty percent increase in grants awarded, including commitments from The Ford Foundation, The Rockefeller Foundation, Target and Bank of America. Derek is an accomplished writer and producer, committed to new work at intersections of race, class, gender, sexuality and technology. He is developing NightQueen, an afro-surreal performance suite, as a 2021 Creative Capital Awardee. Derek’s passion project is Bring the Beat Back - a queer, black, sci-fi, music-theatre experience which was a 2020 O’Neill Music Conference semifinalist. He is a native of Pickerington Ohio and currently splits his time between Chicago, NYC and Los Angeles.
