About Derek Oconnell

As the initial Director of the Student Success System at the University of Nizwa, I oversaw four academic support units that provided various services and programs to more than students from diverse disciplines and backgrounds. With over 15 years of experience leading and developing academic support and advising services at the post-secondary level, I have contributed to the establishment of the first Writing Center in the Sultanate of Oman, which has become a world-class facility and a model for the MENA region. I have a strong educational background and passion for student learning and development, with a Master of Science in Education, a Bachelor of Arts in Law and History, and a Cambridge ESOL Level 5 Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. I lead by example, foster a culture of collaboration and teamwork, and adapt to changing needs and challenges. I have strong creative problem-solving, interpersonal, and coordinating skills that enable me to design and implement effective strategies, deliver quality services, and build positive relationships with students, faculty, and staff. My mission is to help students achieve their academic goals and enhance their learning and performance.
