About Derrick Wheeler

I am passionate about our natural resources and can use my experience in science and policy for conservation efforts. As a fisheries biologist and water quality scientist for over eight years, I loved doing fieldwork out in nature. The opportunity to work in the environment I was helping to protect as a scientist inspired me to further my conservation efforts by pursuing education in natural resources policy and administration (MPA). I have gained further experience in policy through a past position with the Oregon State Legislature, an internship with US Fish and Wildlife Service and volunteer roles with conservation nonprofits. In these experiences, I found my science background beneficial for understanding complicated conservation issues as well as connecting with and building trust with various stakeholders. I would like to continue to meld my background in natural resources science and public policy to positively impact the environment.
