As a student who is studying recreation; leisure plays a huge role in my life as a young African American woman. According to the American Therapeutic Recreation Association, therapeutic recreation is a systematic process that utilizes recreation and other activities as interventions to address the assessed needs of individuals with illnesses. The use of therapeutic recreation is an effective way to improves an individual's physical, mental, and emotional well-being. The use of recreation therapy reduces depression, stress, anxiety, and basic motor functioning within a person. Taking part in recreational activities not only helps the individual but it helps the people around them. Overall developing personal growth. Some skills that I have acquired studying recreational therapy include etiquette, communication, listening, dependability, and team building. Therapeutic recreation is a widespread job, by this I mean you will never be working alone. It is best to learn how to work with others to build traits to help produce teamwork. This use of etiquettecy and communication has allowed me to create a positive and functional work environment not only in my daily job but networking throughout college and daily obstacles. The use of character building and personality ties into being you at all times. Maintaining a working relationship whilst also being able to be yourself is what I love the most.
